Agent Affairs

Description: Includes records related to the management of legal agents hired by the PPSC to conduct prosecutions on behalf of the Federal Crown where the PPSC does not have a regional office or where it is impractical or otherwise not cost-effective for staff counsel to handle cases. In addition, there are records pertaining to the application, selection and agreement processes for legal agents, as well as the rules and guidelines that govern the agents' relationship with the PPSC and other federal government departments or enforcement agencies who refer matters for prosecution.

Competition Law

Description: Includes records related to the prosecution of offences under the Competition Act as well as the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act, the Textile Labelling Act, and the Precious Metals Marking Act. These statutes are administered and enforced by the Commissioner of Competition, who overseas the Competition Bureau. They also contain legal advice provided by PPSC prosecutors during the course of investigations on matters that may lead to prosecutions.

Drug Prosecutions

Description: Includes records related to the prosecution of offences under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. The records contain information relating to a broad range of criminal activity, including possession of marihuana, cocaine trafficking, and the production of methamphetamine for export. In addition, there are records involving the operations of Drug Treatment Courts that have been established in major urban centres to help reduce recidivism by addressing the problem posed by addiction-motivated crime. They contain information relating to the work of prosecutors, judges, defence counsel, treatment providers and other personnel who provide supervision and support for participants admitted into the program.

Economic Crime Prosecutions

Description: Includes records related to the Federal-Provincial-Territorial (FPT) Heads of Prosecutions Committee's role in coordinating many aspects of criminal law practice across Canada, including promoting the assistance and cooperation among different prosecution services and facilitating the coordination and adoption, where possible, of a consistent position on national prosecution issues. In addition, there are records relating the Director of Public Prosecutions’ role as permanent co-chair of the Committee as well as the PPSC's role as its secretariat.

Fine Recovery

Description: Includes records related to the administration of the National Fine Recovery Program under the terms of an assignment issued by the Attorney General of Canada in 2007. The records pertain to the outstanding fines that are recovered through various types of interventions, including demand letters, telephone contacts, payment negotiations, seizure of assets, and income garnishment. They can also be recovered through the suspension of federal licenses and by way of set-off against the offender's income tax and GST. The final resort is the issuance of warrant of committal in cases where offenders try to avoid making payment despite their ability to pay.

Proceeds of Crime and Offence-Related Property

Description: Includes records related to the seizure and restraint of proceeds of crime as well as property used in the commission of offences. As drug offences are often revenue-generating crimes, they represent the majority of offences that generate proceeds of crime and property used to commit crime. There are also records pertaining to the Integrated Proceeds of Crime (IPOC) initiative, which contributes to the disruption and deterrence of targeted organized criminal groups by pursuing their illegally obtained proceeds and assets.
